I’m Erik Brown. This site is where I share ideas, observations, things I’ve learned, and occasionally something that has been rattling around in my head long enough that I need to write it down.

You’ll find a wide range of subjects here: faith, marriage and family, artificial intelligence and technology, personal finance, data visualization, books, history, volunteering, and whatever else I happen to find interesting.

The common thread is ideas that make me stop and think, especially those that cause me to look at something familiar a little differently. My hope is that occasionally something here does the same for you.

A Little About Me

The two most important parts of my life are closely connected: I’m a Christian and I’m married to Kerrie. She has had an enormous influence on my faith and the person I’ve become.

I sometimes describe myself as a practicing Christian for a reason. I’m still practicing. I don’t have it all figured out, and I certainly don’t always live up to what I believe. If I fall short of the Christian ideal, blame me, not God.

I’m also a husband, father, grandfather, friend, working professional, church volunteer, data guy, technology enthusiast, reader, budding audiophile, and lifelong learner.

Professionally, I’ve spent much of my career working with data, reporting, visualization, technology, and problem solving. I enjoy figuring out how things work, questioning assumptions, and looking for what might be missing.

Outside of work, I read, volunteer, spend time with family and friends, and devote probably more time than necessary to audio equipment, technology, money, history, and ideas.

Why I Write

This site began years ago as a requirement for a master’s program. Somewhere along the way it became mine.

Writing forces me to clarify what I actually think. Sometimes I discover I believe something more strongly than I realized. Occasionally I discover I was wrong. Both are useful outcomes.

I don’t expect everyone who reads this site to agree with me. That would be boring anyway. I hope we can disagree thoughtfully, remain curious, and perhaps learn something from each other.
